Lixa is a city in the municipality of Felgueiras, in the Tâmega e Sousa sub-region, set between Amarante and Felgueiras in a landscape the parish council describes as the "Terra Verde". It became a city in 1995. The first settlement probably stood on Monte Ladário, which still gives wide views over the surrounding hills, and an ancient road ran from there down to Amarante. The Inquirições of 1220 already list farms belonging to the church of Vila Cova.
The parish church of Vila Cova da Lixa was built in 1713, reusing the stonework of an earlier church that was probably Romanesque and dated to around 1148. Nearby stand the Chapel of São Roque, from 1599, and the Casa da Torre, a manor with a coat of arms, chapel and fountain. In neighbouring Borba de Godim, first recorded in 1136 in a ruling by Afonso Henriques, the parish church keeps a painted coffered ceiling with baroque designs that several authors consider the finest in the municipality. On 2 April 1834, a major battle between Liberals and Absolutists was fought on the Monte das Vitórias.
Vinho verde, regional embroidery and lively trade are the town's hallmarks, according to the parish council, alongside kiwi growing, cattle raising and beekeeping. Every year in the first week of September, Lixa holds its big romaria, the festivities in honour of Senhora das Vitórias.
The craft beer scene in Lixa is still waiting to be discovered. With Amarante and Felgueiras close by, travellers can look around the wider area to see what is being poured nearby.
