Almancil is a parish in the municipality of Loulé, in the Algarve, raised to city status on 4 October 2024. Its coastline includes the beaches of Ancão, Quinta do Lago, Garrão and Vale do Lobo, and the western part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park lies within the parish.
People have lived here since the Palaeolithic, but the most important archaeological finds date from Roman times, at São João da Venda, Ludo and Quinta do Lago, the last also occupied in the Islamic period. In the 16th century Alexandre Massai, working for the Portuguese Crown, surveyed the Algarve's coastal forts, and his work preserves the plan of the fort of Farrobilhas, which has since been lost to the advancing coastline. Almancil has been a parish seat since 1836. The tourist boom from the 1970s brought rapid growth, and the town became a vila on 18 December 1987.
The highlight is the Church of São Lourenço. In the 18th century the people rebuilt the ruined hermitage in fulfilment of a promise to Saint Lawrence, and it came through the 1755 earthquake almost unscathed. Inside, azulejo tiles applied in 1730 by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, according to an inscription in the choir, tell the saint's life in eight figurative panels, and the dome is lined entirely with tiles. The church was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1946. Its feast day on 10 August, Saint Lawrence's day, has long drawn large numbers of the faithful.
The craft beer scene in Almancil is still waiting to be discovered. After the beaches and the tiles of São Lourenço, travellers can look around the wider central Algarve, including nearby Loulé and Faro, to see what is being poured there.
